Osteopenia or osteoporosis often shows no symptoms in the early stages, but as bones weaken, they become more prone to fractures even from minor impacts, especially in the elderly or individuals with risk factors such as calcium deficiency, prolonged steroid use, or a family history of the condition. The Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test is a method used to assess bone health and screen for osteoporosis, brittle bones, or fractures from the early stages, especially in the spine, hips, and other joints.

The group of medications that slow down or reduce bone resorption works by inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts, the cells responsible for breaking down bone tissue. As people age or when the body experiences a loss of certain hormones, bone mass decreases rapidly, leading to osteoporosis.

Anabolic agents are a group of medications that help "stimulate new bone formation" by activating osteoblasts (bone-building cells) to work more efficiently. They help increase bone density and restore lost bone tissue, especially in patients with severe osteoporosis or those at high risk of fractures from even minor falls or previous fractures caused by osteoporosis. These agents not only help strengthen bones but also assist in restoring the function of bones damaged by osteoporosis.
